How to Season a Cast Iron Skillet with Perfect Results

Any cast iron utensil may be seasoned using the following process.

  1. Wash skillet with soap and water. Dry thoroughly.
  2. Place skillet in cold oven. Turn oven to 200°F or to lowest setting possible.
  3. Leave skillet in oven long enough for it to get warm, but not hot.
  4. When skillet is warm, rub all over with a teaspoonful of oil, to include the handle.
  5. Use a dry cloth and try to rub off all of the oil.
  6. Place a sheet pan on bottom rack of oven. Place skillet in oven on middle rack - UPSIDE DOWN.
  7. Turn oven to highest setting. Bake skillet for one hour.
  8. Kill heat leaving skillet inside until completely cooled.
  9. For best possible results, repeat process two more times - will take about 8 hours total - but will be worth it.

Hint: after using skillet and while still hot, place about a tablespoon of oil in the skillet, followed by a tablespoon of salt. Holding a couple of wadded paper towels with tongs, scrub the inside of the skillet with the salt/oil mixture to remove any food particles. Wipe the skillet out with a dry cloth and store. (Never use soap and water.)
