INGREDIENTS

  • For One Sandwich:
  • 1 6" hoagie or sub bun
  • 1 6" Italian sausage, mild, medium or hot - to taste
  • 6 or 7 slices bell pepper sliced 1/4" thick
  • 6 or 7 onion rings sliced 1/4" thick
  • Butter or margarine to spread on cut sides of bun
  • Cooking oil to saute bell pepper and onion
  • Garlic powder for sprinkling on buttered bun halves
  • Italian seasoning, optional
  • Marinara sauce, optional
  • Prepared mustard, optional

DIRECTIONS

  • If bun is not split, cut bun in-half, lengthwise. Spread cut portion of each bun half with butter or margarine. Sprinkle lightly with garlic powder.
  • Cut sausage in-half, lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through.
  • Heat flat-top grill or heavy bottomed skillet to 350°F. Place about 1 Tbl oil on hot grill. Place pepper and onion in the hot oil and toss to coat with oil. Spread peppers and onions out on grill to allow for thorough cooking. Place the sausage on the hot grill. Toss peppers and onions occasionally to prevent burning. Once peppers and onions begin to become translucent they should be removed from heat. Cook sausage for about 5 minutes and turn to cook other side.
  • Place bun on grill. Cook sausage until done, or until internal temperature reaches 170°F. Place pepper and onion back on grill to heat through. Place toasted bun on serving plate, place sausage on bottom part of bun, top sausage with pepper and onion. Sandwich is ready. Optionally, sandwich may be sprinkled with Italian seasoning, or have marinara sauce and/or mustard used as a condiment.
