INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • Freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon instant minced onion
  • 1/2 cup tomato juice
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 3 hamburger buns, halved and toasted
  • 6 slices tomato
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine

DIRECTIONS

  • Crumble ground beef into a 1 1/2-quart casserole or an 8-inch round glass cake dish.
  • Cook, uncovered, for 5 to 6 minutes, or until meat has lost its red color. Stir once during cooking time.
  • Break up meat with a fork. Add salt, oregano, dry mustard, pepper, onion, tomato juice, and cheese. Stir thoroughly.
  • Cook, covered, for 1 to 2 minutes, or until cheese is melted and mixture is piping hot.
  • Place toasted hamburger halves on a broiler pan. Spoon hamburger mixture on top of each bun. Top each with a slice of tomato. Dot with butter.
  • Place under broiler on conventional range and broil until tomatoes are lightly browned.
