INGREDIENTS

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm (105° to 115° F) water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon salad oil
  • 2 3/4 to 3 cups flour
  • 1 egg

DIRECTIONS

  • Sprinkle yeast over the 1/4 cup warm water in large bowl of electric mixer. Add sugar. Let stand until yeast is soft (about 5 minutes). Stir in the 1/2 cup warm water, salt, and oil.
  • Add 1 1/2 cups of the flour. Mix to blend, then beat at medium speed until smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes). Add egg and beat until smooth. Gradually stir in about 1 cup more flour to make a soft dough.
  • Turn dough out onto a board or pastry cloth coated with about 1/4 cup flour. Knead until dough is smooth and satiny and small bubbles form just under surface (10 to 12 minutes), adding just enough additional flour to prevent dough from being sticky.
  • Turn dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk (35 to 45 minutes). Punch dough down, cover with inverted bowl, and let rest for 10 minutes.
