INGREDIENTS

  • For crumb topping:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup turbinado sugar (such as Sugar in the Raw)
  • For the filling:
  • 2 Gala apples (about 1 lb.)
  • 2 Golden Delicious apples (about 1 lb.)
  • 1 12-oz pkg. frozen blackberries, thawed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp lemon zest (from about 2 lemons)
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch

DIRECTIONS

  • For the topping: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon and salt. Add the butter; rub the mixture between fingers until coarse crumbs form. Toss with the oats and sugar and squeeze the crumble between your hands to form small clumps. Cover and chill for at least 20 minutes or up to 5 days.
  • When ready to use, spoon over the filling, breaking up any very large pieces.
  • For filling: Peel, core and cut the apples into 1/4 in. thick slices. In a large bowl, toss together the apples, blackberries, sugar, zest, juice and cornstarch.
  • Butter a 9-in. pie plate or shallow 1 to 1 1/2 qt. baking dish. Transfer the filling to the prepared dish. Top the filling and bake at 375°F until the fruit is tender and the top is golden brown, 60 to 75 minutes.
